Luckydog Animal Control Adoption Program
Pet of the Month

News
Winter is upon us and with the cold New England weather comes the worry of adequate shelter and food/water for animals living outside. Other hazards for free roaming dogs arise when dangerous road conditions and/or low visibility for drivers make these animals more vulnerable to being hurt or causing people to be hurt in accidents as a result of these dogs on and near roadways. It can be an unforgiving season for our 4-legged friends so please be on the lookout to prevent tragedy.
Petfinder has proven to be a super tool for use in helping pets and their new people find each other. After many years of being able to place dogs locally through ads and word of mouth, things have changed over the past 7 years or so and I seldom get local inquiries because of an over-saturation in the area. Without this site many deserving dogs would not have found their wonderful homes! I hope you'll check out whatever animals are available now or come back again if a likely match is not waiting for you right now.
Who We Are
This adoption program is running solely by one person; the animal control officer for 3 rural towns in southwestern Vermont. Rather than burden the local shelter with these town's unclaimed strays which are deemed suitable for placement, I began my own adoption program in 1984. In the past it had been mostly word of mouth advertising and exposure with the result being that sometimes dogs were with me for quite some time before a suitable match could be made with a new home. The dogs and I are all very thankful for the exposure that Petfinder gives these needy pups.
Animals are housed in my small kennel and carefully screened as best as can be done in a kennel situation. As a professional dog trainer and competitor I try to get an accurate picture of the dog, it's temperament, trainability and suitablity for a variety of home situations. I believe it is important to represent these dogs as honestly as possible so that the layperson looking for a pet and companion will have the best chance of adopting a buddy, not an unexpected problem. I am always available for follow up counseling and guidance in an effort to assure that both owner and animal are happy and well suited to each other.
Adopting a Friend
If you find a dog through the Luckydog Adoption Program and are approved for adoption , you will be required to fill out an adoption contract which covers some basic care and responsible ownership terms. Through this contract you will also agree to return the dog to the Program if for any reason, at any time, you can no longer keep the dog. You will also be required to pay a deposit towards spaying or neutering of any unaltered animals. A small donation towards the adoption program is asked to help defray some of the costs associated with feeding, medications, housing and other necessary care.
As importantly, I want to hear back from you to know all are happy! (this is one of the few, small rewards in this all too often heartbreaking work.)
Volunteering and Donations
I certainly welcome qualified foster homes for special needs dogs. If you think you'd like to help out please let me know.
Thanks to "Luckydog"; the namesake for the new and exciting turn this Program has taken; we now have a "Luckydog Fund" started by generous donations from local dog lovers who read the distraught letter I wrote to our local newspaper when there were no funds to help with Luckydog's needed surgery. We are currently in the process of filing for non-profit status and an account is being set up to handle donations. My dream is that this concept will grow to enable me to expand this to a county-wide fund for stray dogs handled by animal control agencies. Please contact me for updated info if you would like to help out.
Come Visit Us!
The kennel is located on our own property off of a quiet country back road in Arlington, VT. Because I am not only the only caregiver but also the Animal Control Officer on call for 3 towns, visits are by appointment only, between the hours of 9AM -5PM, 7 days a week. I will do my best to work with your scheduling, it's just that it's very hard for ME to schedule hours since I never know when I am going to be called out on emergency calls. I'm always able to work out something that suits us all.
